8. Cappuccino
Restaurant with important archaeological remains of two vaults of the circus.
This restaurant offers the possibility of eating between four walls that are almost two thousand years old. It is located in Tarragona’s main square: Plaça de la Font (Fountain Square). All the houses on the south side of the square were built upon pre-existing remains of the vaults of the Roman Circus, which has resulted in all the houses on this side of the square having the same width. At Cappuccino you will have the opportunity to see the interior of two of these vaults and see how Roman architecture still survives today inside the houses of the square.

The premises occupied by Cappuccino are built in the space of two of the ancient vaults of the Circus, still standing with large visible parts of stone worked in the opus quadratum style on their side walls. The establishment’s interior has undergone many changes through the centuries, and a diverse range of modifications can still be observed. As the establishment occupies the ground floor of two houses built on the vaults of the Circus, the premises are divided into two parts that must have originally been independent vaults. These now serve the same purpose and are used as a dining room. The transition between both vaults can be easily appreciated, as they are joined through a rough opening surely made around the 16th to 18th centuries. At the back of the premises, there is a pointed Gothic arch of which only a third can be seen, which reinforces the certainty that these vaults have been occupied for centuries. The premises also hide some old openings that have been closed again sometime in the past, probably during the Early Modern era, in addition to those still in use.
